New requirements for schools and local education authorities

New requirements for schools and local education authorities to make educational facilities more accessible to disabled children should be strengthened, according to Children in Scotland. The charity recently gave evidence on the Education Bill currently making its way through Parliament to the Scottish Executive's Education, Culture and Sport Committee and said that timescales should be put in place for drawing up the new strategies on ensuring accessibility. The charity also called for provision for appeals and complaints and said the strategies should be actively disseminated to children and their parents. Chair of Children in Scotland's Special Needs Advisory Forum Dr Patricia Jackson said, 'We believe that information on what the legislation means in practice must be given to parents, pupils, all school staff and the general public to create awareness about its implementation.'
