New study to analyse choices in informal childcare

The Daycare Trust has been awarded a grant of more than 350,000 in lottery funding for research into informal childcare.

The two-year study will explore in depth how parents use informalchildcare and why they choose it over formal childcare.

Researchers will look at how far parents' choices are influenced byclass, locality, parental status and social disadvantage and whether theavailability of higher quality formal childcare would influence theirpreferences.

Alison Garnham and Emma Knights, chief executives of the Daycare Trust,said, 'We are delighted to have been awarded this funding to carry out alandmark research project into the use of informal childcare. Despiterecord investment in formal childcare, the number of parents usinginformal childcare from friends and relatives remains as high as formalprovision, and politicians are beginning to focus more attention on whatit offers.
