Nice for some

Further to the eight-page pull-out section on outdoor play (5 April), I found parts of the section very informative and some of the ideas very useful. However, I work in a playgroup setting and can see no possible way of letting children decide when and if they play outside. Due to staffing levels, either we all play out or we all play indoors. This being the case, we cannot play out in inclement weather because it is unfair to force children to play out in the cold if they would rather not.

Some children would simply stand there and shiver.

I was not sure whether the author was actually suggesting we should take young children outside in a downpour, but as for the possibility of parents disapproving, they most certainly would when presented with a dripping wet child at the end of a session.

The list of things you should be able to find in your outdoor area was idealistic but not very practical. I am sure there's a nursery somewhere that has them all, but I would be very surprised if a playgroup had all these resources at its fingertips.
