Nick Clegg to unveil new system of flexible parental leave

Mothers and fathers will be able to share paid leave and pay at any time during the first year after a child is born, Nick Clegg is expected to announce today.

In a speech this morning the Deputy Prime Minister is due to unveil a shake-up of maternity and paternity leave rules and a new system of flexible parental leave.

The right to request flexible working will also be extended to all employees, so that, grandparents, other relatives and family friends can apply for flexible working to help with childcare.

Referring to the recent report by the Resolution Foundation on the one million women missing from the economy, Mr Clegg will acknowledge the ‘impossible mathematical equation’ that many parents face in deciding how they will manage to pay for bills and arrange childcare.
