In the interests of 'parental choice' the Government has stated in its proposed national standards for daycare that childminders can smack babies and toddlers with parents' written consent. Registered childminders care for more than 300,000 children and under the proposed standards they can also smoke in front of them, with the same proviso. 'We are not keen to intrude on the private lives of families,' a DfEE spokeswoman explained to Nursery World.
