NOF grants for Scottish, Irish clubs

Out-of school provision in Northern Ireland and Scotland has benefited from the latest round of grants from the New Opportunities Fund announced at the end of August. In Northern Ireland, the final announcement of the Out of school hours childcare grants programme has seen 1.3m awarded to 16 projects creating more than 1,300 childcare places. This brings the total invested since 1999 to more than 9.2m to create 13,800 childcare places across the country. The awards were made to projects in Belfast, Armagh, Omagh, Fermanagh, Cookstown, Coleraine, Ballymoney and Craigavon.

One of the out-of-school providers to benefit was Oasis Caring in Action, which applied for funding for St Stephen's After-School Club, a cross-community childcare project for families in west Belfast on Church of Ireland premises at the interface between the Falls and Lower Shankill roads in the city. The club offers after-school care to children from the Protestant and Roman Catholic communities but has no holiday cover.
