Northern Ireland early years strategy will go up to age six

Northern Ireland's first early years strategy is to focus on children up to the age of six.

The draft strategy for nought to six-year-olds is still being worked on before it goes to the Education Committee for approval.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Education said, 'A broad and inclusive public consultation exercise will follow before the strategy is finalised and published.'

Early years organisations have been eagerly waiting for the strategy to be finalised.

Siobhan Fitzpatrick, chief executive officer for Early Years: the organisation for young children, said she is hoping the draft strategy will be out for final consultation in June, with the final strategy launched later in the year.

'Early Years would like the strategy to include a focus on the importance of the 0-6 stage of development, with an emphasis on well-being, family and community,' said Ms Fitzpatrick.
