- Health for the family

Nearly 50 local families learned about useful ways to get fit at a'Healthy Families Fair' hosted by Hawksworth Wood Children's Centre inLeeds, Yorkshire. Children and parents took part in street dancesessions and dodgeball games. They were offered expert advice on healthylifestyles and were given a handy pack of vegetables with easy-to-followrecipes to make at home.

- Dads have their day

A 'Daddy Day' was held at Lillingtons Montessori Nursery in Ladywell,south London, for fathers who want to get more involved with theirchild's education. Eleven fathers came along to help children with theirlearning activities. Nursery manager Jaime Fox said, 'It's importantthat fathers engage in the child's early years to understand what we aredoing here and it's fundamental both parents are involved together.'

- What a character

Children at Little Acorns nursery in Mirfield, West Yorkshire,celebrated World Book Day on 6 March by dressing up as their favouritecharacters. One-year-old Harry dressed as Teletubby Dipsy, two-year-oldLewis as Thomas the Tank Engine and one-year-old Max as Roary the RacingCar, joined by nursery nurse Jackie Golec as Jessie the cowgirl from'Toy Story 2'.

- Well-being award

The Happy Days Childcare group of nurseries in Pembrokeshire are thefirst in Wales, along with Jumping Beans, to achieve the 'Oak Tree'award for the Health Promoting Schools and Early Years Project fromWelsh Assembly Government. The project focuses on not only good diet andnutrition, but physical exercise, safety, the environment, managementand the all-round well-being of children, staff and visitors at thesetting.

- Centre set sailing

A 15-year-old sailor officially opened a children's centre at a schoolin Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, last week. Local boy Michael Perhambecame the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic in January 2007at the age of 14. The PB1 Children's Centre will be run by HertsmereLeisure, a sports, recreation and arts charity, in partnership withHertsmere Council. Among the dozens of activities and facilities onoffer at the centre are a creche, a cafe and a baby clinic.

- Support for study

The impact of study support on improving school attendance andchildren's behaviour is the subject of a new free guide published by thecharity ContinYou. The guide, which includes tips and case studies,shows the importance of targeting provision, developing a wide range ofappropriate activities and linking study support into a whole-schoolapproach. It can be downloaded atwww.continyou.org.uk/attendancebehaviour.

Children from The Book People Nursery in Bangor, Gwynedd, have raised140 for Marie Curie Cancer Care by planting daffodil bulbs.Children were given their own mini pot, containing a bulb, in exchangefor a small donation. They planted the flowers in the autumn. Theproject was part of the Great Daffodil Appeal, Marie Curie's annualfundraising campaign that takes place throughout March.
