Nurseries get into the swing for Ryder Cup challenge

Scotland is the home of golf, so it is fitting that the management committee of Carnoustie Golf Links - which has hosted the British Open Championship - has donated golf equipment to local nurseries, as part of its bid to promote golf in the community. The town's Kinloch nurswry has been making good use of its bag containing ten putters and ten irons (including left-handed clubs).

The equipment is specifically designed for young children. The clubheads are specifically weighted to make contact with the ball easier and are colour coded with red putters and blue irons. The balls are made of soft sponge.

'The children love anything physical,' says nursery teacher Allie Coutts. 'One of the children's fathers has already come in to teach the children how to use the clubs properly.'

The emphasis is not on getting the ball into the hole - it is about developing physical and social skills.
