Nurseries improve for re-inspection

Most of the 1,100 providers initially judged inadequate by Ofsted under the new inspection framework have been found satisfactory on re-inspection. The Ofsted report Making a difference, published on Friday, said that around 3 per cent of childcare providers were found to be inadequate between April 2005 and June 2006.

The Ofsted report Making a difference, published on Friday, said that around 3 per cent of childcare providers were found to be inadequate between April 2005 and June 2006.

By the end of June, Ofsted had re-inspected 490 of these providers and judged 87 per cent of them satisfactory or better.

However, 180 providers who were judged inadequate had resigned their registrations by June this year and Ofsted was forced to cancel the registrations of 11 providers who had failed to take the actions set out at the time of re-inspection.

Ofsted re-inspects all inadequate providers within a year. HM Chief Inspector of Schools Maurice Smith told Nursery World that the report was 'the best example of the causal relationship between Ofsted's work and improving standards'. He added, 'These 10,000 childcare places would not have improved without the new grading system.'
