Early autumn jobs

* Finish harvesting tomatoes; greenish trusses may ripen if picked and kept in a closed paper bag. Perhaps drop a very ripe tomato or two on to a pot of soil or compost outdoors for free tomato plants next spring.

* Pull up your giant sunflower, measure its length, and notice the swirly seed patterns. Open the stripey husks to see the seeds, and save some for planting.

* Let evening primrose and fennel plants run to seed for winter bird food.
