Nursery nurses plan action after executive pay soars

Greenwich nursery nurses involved in a long-running pay dispute are furious after the London borough increased its chief executive's salary by 18,000 - more than one of the nursery nurses can earn in a year. Unison officials are finalising plans for a ballot on industrial action after the council refused to pay nursery nurses in full following a regrading exercise in which union and management agreed new job descriptions.

Greenwich nursery nurses can earn a maximum of 16,746 a year. Under the regrading they should be able to earn up to 21,885, but the council said it could only pay a maximum of 18,927. This would leave their pay lagging well behind that of their counterparts in other London boroughs.

Unison branch secretary Onay Kasab said there had been 'an extremely angry reaction' among members after the chief executive's pay rose from Pounds 160,000 to 178,000 a year. The director of children's services and the director of finance have seen their salaries increase by 20,000 to 135,000.
