Nursery nurses reveal lack of diet knowledge

A shortage of nutritional and dietary information for those working with one- to three-year-olds has been highlighted in a survey of healthcare and early years professionals. Research agency TNS Healthcare interviewed 301 carers from across the UK on behalf of the Forum on Infant and Toddler Nutrition and Development. The sample was made up of 75 paediatricians, 75 nursery nurses, 76 health visitors and 75 community dieticians.

Research agency TNS Healthcare interviewed 301 carers from across the UK on behalf of the Forum on Infant and Toddler Nutrition and Development. The sample was made up of 75 paediatricians, 75 nursery nurses, 76 health visitors and 75 community dieticians.

Around 80 per cent of the nursery nurses surveyed said they felt they would benefit greatly from information in the areas of planning a diet for an allergic toddler, managing fussy eaters, the importance of nutrition to toddler health, and the nutritional requirements for one- to three-year-olds.

The forum is a multi-disciplinary team of experts and practitioners set up to provide health and early years workers with better access to nutritional information. It is supported by an educational grant from the Infant Nutrition division of Nutricia. However, the views and advice of the group are meant to be independent of Nutricia and its commercial interests.
