Nursery owners recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

The founder of Children 1st Day Nurseries has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list.

Also honoured is Cathy Bache, who opened the Secret Garden Outdoor Nursery in Fife in 2007 - Scotland's first outdoor nursery - has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM).

Gillian Smith Founder and Manager, Gooseberry Bush Day Nursery, Camborne, Cornwall is also awarded a BEM.

Chief executive of the Children 1st nursery group Margaret Mason, whose career in early years spans 60 years, has been appointed an Officer of the British Empire (OBE).

Mrs Mason left school at 15 with no formal qualifications and became a nursery nurse, receiving a special certificate early on in her career for changing nappies.

The nursery owner was also one of the founding members of the National Day Nurseries Association, and co-write the ‘Quality Counts’ document, one of the first nationally shared quality assurance documents.
