Nursery staff take action to save jobs

Special needs nursery officers have balloted for industrial action against Lancashire County Council in a final bid to save their service. The nine nursery officers provide care, therapy and diagnosis for under-fives who have special needs, working within a multi-disciplinary team. The council 'disestablished' their posts at six child development centres last February following a budget review (News, 27 July). They received redeployment letters last month.

Planned industrial action is to take the form of 'work to rule'. The Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), representing the officers, may also launch an industrial tribunal for breach of contract.

Les Parker, Lancashire secretary for the TGWU, said the council had breached its own budget procedure by failing to consult or inform the unions, health services and parents.
