Nursery World Awards 2008: Resources - Knowledge & Understanding of the World

WINNER: The Dark Den and Accessory Kit, TTS Group

This den can be anything a child or practitioner wants it to be; arainbow cave, an ice castle or a classic sensory area. The darknesslends itself to sensory exploration and discovery, creating feelings ofawe and wonder in the children that are not easily experienced in aclassroom.

Children will approach and view the den in countless different ways butalways as their own space. It is for investigation, creative play, andthe introduction of science. Here, they can begin to marvel at light anddark, textures and touch, and exploring all five of their senses.

There is no end to the possibilities for creative play; testimonialsdescribed the den being used as a spaceship, a music cube and a languagecentre. Objects that are closely examined before entering will be viewedin totally different ways inside the den.

This is a wonderful tool to encourage expression, children are eager totalk about what they find and listen to others' interpretations. Nylondouble-skin blocks out the light and playing in the dark is always athrill - putting the lights out to create shadow puppets guarantees abig giggle. This den creates time for children to engage and followtheir own ideas and play through them. It can also simply be a refuge orquiet place to relax in.

Practitioners will find the den a great way to provide support andattention for children with special needs, and the structured nature ofthe activity will help them with behaviour and communication. Theaccessory pack comes with glow and flicker toys, torch-like switches, and fibre-optics.

Early Years Foundation Stage requirements are easily met as children arechallenged to experiment and make their own choices. The den is simpleto put up and stow away, which is great for settings with limitedspaces. Last but not least, it provides real value for money.
