Nursery World Awards 2009: Individuals - Newcomer of the Year

WINNER: GEMMA BOHR, DIZZY DUCKS DAY NURSERY, BILLERICAY, ESSEX

Gemma Bohr started working in the pre-school room in July 2008. Shequickly asked to take on extra responsibilities and became the nursery'sinclusion officer working with families of children with English as anadditional language.

Gemma has devised many ways of ensuring that these families and childrenfeel included in the setting. She organises 'culture specific' days suchas Spanish Day, Turkish Day and Chinese Day, and invites families tojoin in with the celebrations.

At Chinese New Year, Gemma invited a Chinese parent into the nursery andhelped her to set up 'Chinese' style activities with the children, suchas making a Chinese dragon, tasting Chinese dishes and Chinese songs andgames. For Turkish Day, she arranged for a couple of Turkish families tocome in to the nursery and cook Turkish food with the children and teachthe key groups a selection of Turkish folk songs.
