WINNER: WORCESTERSHIRE EARLY YEARS PROJECT - FOETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER

The Worcestershire Early Years and Childcare Service has spent two yearsraising awareness of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) anddeveloping a resource pack to support early years settings in theirinclusive practice.

It began in January 2007, when Worcestershire County Council hosted anearly years conference on early support and intervention for childrenwith special needs.

One of the speakers, Professor Barry Carpenter, of Oxford University, whose research focuses on the education of children with FASD, spokeabout the lack of understanding and research about the disorder, whichis caused by mothers drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

Senior managers at Worcestershire began to wonder how early yearspractitioners in the county were supporting and including children whomay have FASD. Out of this came the groundbreaking Building Bridges withUnderstanding project to look at how FASD manifests itself. It came upwith a set of resources to support practitioners in working with allchildren inclusively.
