Nutritional value The term 'white' fish includes all fish that have white flesh: cod, plaice, haddock, etc. All are excellent sources of protein - better, in fact, than meat. They also supply potassium, iodine, selenium, calcium, B3 (niacin) and B12, and are low in fat and calories. It is recommended that children learn to enjoy fish from babyhood.

Using fish

* Babies over six months can be given flakes of a mild-flavoured, easily digested white fish such as whiting, and then gradually move on to plaice or coley.

* Never give children raw fish.

* Avoid shark, marlin and swordfish which can be high in mercury. Also avoid smoked fish - it can be salty and may contain chemicals.
