What is teaching childcare courses really like? Lecturer and personal tutor Cynthia Isaac opens her diary to take us through her typical, often gruelling, working week Monday

My week really began yesterday, marking assignments at home. There are 30 on my desk and on the floor in bags. And that's just for the coming week!

I have been working at City and Islington College of Further Education in London for the past 12 years, both as a course tutor, lecturer and as a personal tutor on CACHE childcare courses.

Being a course tutor involves managing a team of lecturers on a course, timetabling and making sure the course runs smoothly. Personal tutors give extra support with the curriculum and pastoral care to students both individually and as groups. Balancing these roles with the teaching can be extremely demanding.
