As Reggio celebrates its 40th anniversary, <B>Carlina Rinaldi</B> and <B>Peter Moss</B> explore the widespread appeal of one of the world's most important networks of childhood centres

This year, the Italian city of Reggio Emilia celebrates the 40th anniversary of the opening of the first municipal early childhood centre. People from around the world will also celebrate. For since 1964, Reggio has become one of the most important early childhood experiences in the world.

Every year, thousands visit the city to learn about this experience. Since 1981, the Reggio exhibition, 'The Hundred Languages of Children', has visited more than 100 cities in 23 countries: this year it returns to the UK. There are 'Reggio networks' in 13 countries, including the UK. But what is Reggio? And what is its worldwide appeal?
