On your marks

In our setting, we help young children to make marks and to recognise their own names as a way of beginning to realise that writing is a means of communication, says Pat Johnson Planned learning intentions

*Six cardboard or wooden document holders *paper and card of different shapes, colours and sizes *children's name cards *laminator *Blu-Tack *small plastic hooks *a good selection of writing tools *plastic tubs *scissors *junk mail *envelopes *used stamps *related resources such as sticky tape, paper clips, split pins and hole punches Step by step

* Hang the document holders on plastic hooks if possible, or stand them along the back of the tables.
