Onwards and up!

Linda Middleton, who won Playworker of the Year at the Excellence in Childcare Awards, explains how she came to run the Parkstone Kids Club in Hull 'right back to my school days I can remember playing out, down our street with my dolls and tin pram. In my adolescent years I was always baby-sitting and looking after children for the neighbours. I wanted to be a nanny or work with children when I left school but in the end I became a women's hairdresser until I married in 1972.

I am 49 now and have been married to my husband Christopher for 30 years - I am also a grandmother! My first daughter came along in 1975 and Rebecca was born in 1980. I enjoyed my time at home with the girls. Of course, we didn't have a lot of luxuries in life - my husband worked on building sites but he was always a good provider.
