Organisations give verdict on EYP

Early years and childcare organisations responding to the consultation on Early Years Profes- sional (EYP) status have given a cautious welcome to the plans. Purnima Tanuku, chief executive of the National Day Nurseries Association, said EYP would help early years and childcare professionals achieve the recognition they deserve, but queried how this would be reflected in terms of pay. She said, 'If EYP status is equivalent to qualified teacher status, we feel that salaries and rewards should be comparable. Yet there is an issue of sustainability, as parents simply cannot afford to pay more to support the cost of better pay and we could see these newly qualified staff leaving for better conditions in maintained settings. The short-term funding the Government has made available is also problematic.'
