This book has been written at an extremely prescient time, when the transfer to Ofsted is having a major impact on new and existing early years provision. The book charts the historical background of registration and inspection leading to the development of the Early Years Directorate.

The author examines the role that regulation has played and tries to 'unpick' its future role in the development of services.

It focuses clearly on the need for greater co-ordination of early years services, the principle that regulation must be all about quality, that quality goes beyond a checklist and that objectivity must be present in assessment and regulation.
