Parent workers ease start at nursery

A Sure Start-funded project in Edinburgh is getting children off to the right start at nursery by encouraging parents' involvement in their education. Two 'parent workers' attached to three nursery schools in the city are doing outreach work with parents from the time they put their child's name down for a nursery.

Two 'parent workers' attached to three nursery schools in the city are doing outreach work with parents from the time they put their child's name down for a nursery.

The parent workers aim to help ease children's transition from home to nursery, promoting early literacy and numeracy and also promoting shared play as an important tool for young children's learning.

Organisers of the project had found that although parents had a strong wish for their children to succeed, many were uncertain as to how best to help their children at school, and some parents had unhappy memories of their own school years.
