The warning was given by Stephen Burke to the select committee as it looked at the issue of how suitable and affordable childcare can be provided for all parents who need it to enable them to work. During the 90-minute hearing he said that the typical cost of a day nursery place for a child under the age of two was now 128 a week. 'I think we've nearly reached the ceiling of what parents are prepared to pay for childcare,' he said.
Mr Burke was one of four leading childcare and early years organisation heads to give evidence. The others were Gill Haynes, chief executive of the National Childminding Association, Margaret Lochrie, chief executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, and Anne Longfield, chief executive of the Kids' Clubs Network.
