More children's centres, say MPs

Children's centres should be rolled out beyond the 20 per cent most deprived wards and established in all areas of England, an influential committee of MPs has urged the Government. The House of Commons Work and Pensions Committee, reporting on childcare for working parents, expressed concern that low-income parents in rural areas and in pockets of deprivation in towns and cities outside the 20 per cent most deprived wards are not benefiting sufficiently from the expansion in childcare provision.

In its report published last week, the Committee also suggested that the 250,000 new childcare places to be created by funding allocated in the 2002 Spending Review would not be sufficient to meet the Government's 2010 targets on reducing child poverty and increasing lone parent employment. It recommended that the money needed should be switched from other budgets if extra funding is not available.
