Parents' guide to teaching maths

Parents in Angus can introduce their pre-school children to mathematics confidently thanks to a set of leaflets sent out by the local authority. Angus Council has developed the early mathematics guide, Taking Off to Maths, as a result of the positive feedback received from the Taking Off to Literacy packs distributed three years ago, which proved popular with parents. The leaflets have been sent to all local parents of pre-school children.

Taking Off to Maths aims to encourage and support parents in introducing their children to the subject at an early age by reminding them that mathematics is all around them and that children love learning in an informal way. The project ties into the national Early Intervention initiative which was introduced by the Scottish Executive to give children the best possible start to school life by ensuring that they have the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to develop other skills.
