Part of the team

Local councils might be the last place you'd expect to find people concerned about nannies, their time being taken up with the forms of childcare they register - childminders, nurseries and after-school clubs. But the far-seeing Childcare Development Team at Coventry city council has taken care not to overlook nannies in its efforts to improve local childcare provision, and is busy establishing a nanny support network. The team's Jo Harrison, a former nanny herself, organised and publicised a nanny network evening a few weeks ago at which those attending were given information goodie bags and 5 gift vouchers, while they shared their experiences and tips about nannying. A second meeting earlier this month was attended by eight nannies, and another meeting is planned for 11 July. Jo says that the vision that has emerged for an informal network is somewhere that 'nannies could discuss issues freely, be given ongoing information about training, and aim to raise the profile of nannies'. She can be contacted for more information or advice on 024 7625 1022. Meanwhile, nannies who really want to be counted in their own area's childcare scene could contact the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership at the local council to remind them that they're a vital part of the workforce, and suggest setting up a similar support group.
