Salaries within the childcare sector have soared by up to a third in the past five years, reports Mary Evans in a major pay survey of Nursery World readers The average annual salary of full-time early years practitioners has risen by more than 3,500 during the past five years to just over 15,000 according to the comprehensive Nursery World pay survey.

The average annual salary of full-time early years practitioners has risen by more than 3,500 during the past five years to just over 15,000 according to the comprehensive Nursery World pay survey.

The rise is influenced by what appears to be a new well-remunerated cohort of practitioners: staff working for initiatives such as Sure Start and the new Children's Centres, who fall into the 'other' category within the survey and earn an average of 19,264 a year.

This group have different job titles from the main categories such as nursery nurse and work outside the main work categories such as private nurseries and schools.
