- Woodville Day Nursery, Derbyshire, has been awarded Quality Counts accreditation, the Investors in Children scheme of the NDNA, after passing all 16 modules. Woodville achieved level three, the highest level. Nursery manager Kim Taylor said, 'We always strive for the highest quality of care at Woodville and the team should be proud of their achievement in gaining this award.'

- The Little Acorns Community Nursery in Burnley, Lancashire, is to haveits own garden and outdoor play area, thanks to a 25,000 grantfrom the Henry Smith charity. Nursery manager Michelle Brown said, 'Thisgenerous grant means we will be able to provide an exciting outdoorgarden and play area for babies and a separate one for older children.'The Henry Smith charity makes grants of more than 20m a year. In2006-2009 its major grant programme is focused on children and youngpeople in East Lancashire.

- Booktrust has announced that Viv Bird will take over from Chris Meadeas director when he steps down in September. Viv Bird has worked since1994 at the National Literacy Trust and is currently director of Readingis Fundamental UK, a targeted reading initiative for children indisadvantaged areas. Ms Bird said, 'I am very excited about working withkey partners in Government and the arts to build on past successes andlead Booktrust into its next phase of development.'
