Playgrounds downsizing

Adventure playgrounds across London are being forced to cut staff and reduce services by shortfalls in funding. Disabled children's charity Kids, which runs eight adventure playgrounds across the capital, has cut five out of its 20 permanent playworkers and introduced new staff ratios and charging policies in order to address the 'continued losses' being made at its playgrounds.

Meanwhile, Somerford Grove adventure playground in north London, run by Haringey Play Association, has temporarily reduced its service from five days a week to Saturdays only.

London regional director of Kids, Angela Woodley, said that the charity received grants from local authorities and social services, but the level of funding needed to sustain the playgrounds 'had not been reached' this year.
