'Poetry pockets'

'Poetry pockets' are the latest form of literacy kitbag, as staff at Asquith Court's Ridgeway Day Nursery near Swindon have been encouraging children's interest in poetry and rhyme with pockets containing a poem or nursery rhyme and a pack of activities to share with their families for a week. Nursery manager Theresa Birch said, 'There can be anything from play dough to a musical instrument. The only condition is that the activity has to be related to the subject of the poem. So "Hickory Dickory Dock" is illustrated by a toy mouse, a book about time and even a recipe for mini cheese pizzas.'
