Poll decides what education is for

The current approach to pre-school education has been given the thumbs-up by respondents to a wide-ranging inquiry carried out by the Scottish Parliament's Education, Culture and Sport Committee, in contrast to secondary schooling. The committee sought to explore the question 'What is education for?'. It received evidence from schools, unions, professional associations and universities. Its report, Inquiry into the Purposes of Scottish Education, was published earlier this month and is available on www.scottish.parliament.uk.

The report explains that the existing arrangements for education were seen as 'working most satisfactorily in the pre-school years and in the earlier stages of primary, and least well in the secondary sector, especially its first two years'.

There was widespread support for a broad view of educational purposes, including the promotion of positive values and active citizenship, and a near unanimous view that 'schooling should be a satisfying experience in itself and not merely a preparation for later life'.
