Professional Nanny of the Year named

A 26-year-old nanny working in rural Herefordshire has won Professional Nanny of the Year 2008.

Debbie Darnborough, from Church Stretton in Shropshire, was named the winner of the Voice award at the education union's annual conference on Tuesday (26 July).
The award was launched in 2004 to help raise the professional profile of nannies. Mrs Darnborough has worked as a nanny on and off for eight years and was nominated by her current employers.
'I've been working for them for just over a year and we've always made the time to talk and communicate with each other. That's made a huge difference. They have three children aged seven, five and five months. With the age range, everyday is always very different. It's quite challenging to meet the needs of all of them. This morning we've had a wonderful art session,' she said.
Mrs Darnborough has worked hard to improve her skills, gaining a NNEB, a degree in early childhood and an advanced diploma in child psychology.
'It's been so useful. The more knowledge you have the better. I'd like to do further courses in cognitive behaviour therapy or psychology.'
After being shortlisted for the award Mrs Darnborough had to endure a day of 'nerve-wracking' and 'intense' interviews at Chiltern College.
'They asked me questions about how to keep children safe and happy and about raising the professionalism and profile of nannies.'
'I'm interested in promoting Early Years Professional Status for nannies. There needs to be more nanny networks and nannies should all register on the Ofsted Voluntary Childcare Register. I am trying to get a network together and develop a forum.'
