An appeal for the facility in Handsworth, Sheffield, was launched in theStar local newspaper a year ago with a target of 3,000. It raised4,500 from a range of donors, including businesses, sports clubsand individuals.
The sensory room has just opened at Amy's House, a nursery providingrespite care for 15 children with physical and mental health problemsevery Saturday. It includes a bubble machine, glitterballs, beanbags,fibre optic lights, mirrored walls, a machine with floating balls,soothing music and aromatherapy.
The nursery is now planning to open a sensory garden this spring, fundedby HSBC.
Maurice Littlewood, who founded Amy's House in memory of his lategranddaughter, said, 'I was overjoyed with the amount of money weraised. I couldn't believe the generosity of people. Amy's House hasmade me realise just how many good people there are in the world.'
