The assumption that workers in their forties and fifties do not want to achieve qualifications is contrary to what we are hearing.
In our workforce 40 is young. We want to keep these workers, not as unqualified staff but as professionals who have validated their experience with a nationally recognised qualification. This has personal benefits for workers - and also for the children in their care.
The EPPE (Effective Provision of Pre-School Education) Project found a direct correlation between the level of qualification of an early years worker and the experiences of the child in a pre-five setting. Better knowledge and skills on the part of the worker provide a sure start for the child and family.
