Recording deal

Having just read the eight-page pull-out 'All About Documentation' (5 February), I was amazed there was no mention of the proper procedures required for the observation of children. Anyone photographing or video/audio recording children must seek permission first from the child and their parents or carer. To quote from Childminding: A Step-by-Step Guide, 'Permission for all forms of recording should be obtained from parents, whether written observations, videos, tapes, etc before the child starts with you. You need to stress that all information will be obtained only for professional reasons... you must remember that all information gathered in any form must be stored securely' (Harding and Meldon-Smith, 2003).

I have always found Nursery World's supplements interesting and informative, and I was shocked at the omission of this basic - but crucial - information, particularly in the current climate of heightened awareness over child protection. The author of this supplement would appear to encourage quite freely the recording and displaying of all forms of observation.
