I have only worked in reception for two years and found the immense change in the method of teaching and of learning for four-to five-year-olds took time to adapt to. Thankfully my daughter subscribed to Nursery World while doing her PGCE and I started to use valuable information from the magazine, especially nursery activities and projects.
I now read the whole magazine and then collect the projects in a file. The outdoor play activities have been the most valuable. We were advised to improve on this after our last Ofsted inspection, but came out highly rated this time.
My class teacher has encouraged me to introduce ideas and I couldn't have done it without the magazine - the wormery, water play with guttering from a skip up the road, the writing area, playdough ideas, wet and dry sand areas, planting sunflower seeds and a book corner with homemade story sacks. The construction area with little 'keep off' notices was also a big hit.
