Revised standards for playwork

Playwork is an expanding field. In recent years the number of after- school and holiday clubs has increased significantly and the profession has swelled in numbers and status. It is hardly surprising then, that standards have needed to be reviewed in this sector as well as in early years, and a positive outcome has already been achieved. At the end of November updated level 3 and new level 4 occupational standards were approved by the QCA which reflect the training needs of all those working in a variety of settings including after-school clubs, adventure centres, breakfast clubs, hospital play settings and holiday playschemes.

The revised level 3 NVQs/SVQs in Playwork now include five mandatory units and four optional units from a choice of 12. There are now three level 3 and two level 4 units shared with the Child Care Learning and Development National Occupational Standards - units which are relevant to working with children of any age. All the units in the new standards have been revised to reflect current job roles and responsibilities in the sector.
