Rising demand for after-school care at home

A leading childcare and nanny agency says it has seen a 60 per cent increase in the number of families seeking after-school care over the past year.

Tinies has launched a recruitment drive to find more part-time staff to meet the demand, particularly targeting older people to return to or take up childcare work.

'In the last few months we have seen a rapid increase in the number of parents looking for part-time care for their children,' said Amanda Coxen, director of Tinies. 'Around 40 per cent of our new registrations are now for after-school care, and we turn many more parents away because we know we won't be able to find anyone to work for them.'

She said Tinies will encourage grandparents and mothers of older children to consider working as after-school nannies, who pick up children from school, prepare a meal, help with homework and get children ready for bed. Typical hours for the agency's after-school nannies are from 3.30pm to 7pm, and their average pay is £7 to £8 per hour, rising to £10 in some London areas.
