Rude awakening

'So distressing, I had to turn the television off' is how I have heard 'Nurseries Undercover' described. We have the new Daycare Standards and Ofsted, and with the big push for childcare from Government we have been lulled into thinking all is well.

Not so.

The programme raises a fundamental question - what are we doing to our children by putting them into institutions at such a young age? In 1996, Playgroup Network adopted the proposal 'that children up to the age of two are best looked after in a domestic setting (either with their parents or with childminders)'. This remains our view, although we now include grandparents, and is based on our experiences of being children, having children, and caring for the children of others, and sound research.
