Rural childminders study by video link

Childminders who live in remote areas of Scotland are receiving training via video conferencing links from the Scottish Childminding Association (SCMA). The innovative delivery has been used to ensure childminders in the Highlands and Islands have adequate and equal access to pre-registration training courses.

The innovative delivery has been used to ensure childminders in the Highlands and Islands have adequate and equal access to pre-registration training courses.

The scheme has been developed by Tracy MacLennan, SCMA development officer for Argyll and Bute. She has co-ordinated two video-linked courses between Lochgilphead, Islay and Mull, and the Isle of Bute and Dunoon.

The latter is delivered by childcare tutor Margaret Williams. She runs sessions for three childminding students on the Isle of Bute.

Simultaneously, eight students in Dunoon, in mainland Argyllshire, where no training facilities or tutors are available, receive her training via a video link.
