Safety tips

Safety in D&T concerns all practitioners. Some restrict children's access to tools for fear of accidents; others give free access, which can result in dangerous practice. Practitioners should aim to give children access to a wide range of appropriate tools while at the same time helping them to recognise potential dangers. * Teach simple safety rules as early as possible * Have procedures in place to ensure new children are taught about safety * Treat tools and materials with respect * Use appropriate materials * Model good practice * Use tools for their intended purpose * Use space wisely to avoid distractions * Always use tools such as junior hacksaws and hammers under supervision and wear safety goggles.
