Same old panic

Once again the National Childminding Association (NCMA) is conducting a panic campaign. It did this some years ago when the topic of putting childminders' names on the internet through the Children's Information Services (CIS) was first discussed. I have been a member of the NCMA for more than 16 years, many of those years as a working childminder, but now I work for an organisation that supports around 2,000 childminders. I can report that in Devon there is a huge take-up of the facility within CIS to have information on the web, with very few negative comments.

The NCMA is acting in a negative way, while childminders want to be promoted in a positive light. The real issue here is professionalism. Does the NCMA really believe this is the only way those who wish to harm children can access this information? Child abuse and abduction and the safety of premises have been issues going right back to when social services held lists back in the 1980s.
