The stark advice was given last week by NUT general secretary Doug McAvoy.
It followed the introduction from the start of the school term of the Government's workload agreement, which aims to transfer a number of tasks, such as photocopying and ordering equipment, from teachers to teaching assistants, classroom assistants and some nursery nurses.
Mr McAvoy warned the Government and local authorities that there should be no delay in implementing the changes to the teacher workload and said the NUT would support, through industrial action, any member threatened with disciplinary action for refusing to accept increases or changes to the amount of work they do.
