Scotland-wide claim for nursery nurses

The campaign to raise nursery nurses' wages took a further step this week as Unison Scotland submitted the same pay claim to all Scotland's local authorities. The union put in its claim to 32 councils in an attempt to achieve a Scotland-wide re-grading for nursery nurses on a local basis, after its previous regrading claim was thrown out by the employers' organisation, the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (CoSLA), on the basis that there is no mechanism for negotiating a national claim for nursery nurses.

The new move will create disruption if local authorities do not come to an agreement on a consistent response.

Carol Ball, chair of Unison's nursery nurse working party, said, 'We have been left with no alternative but to raise the same claim separately in each authority. Despite the fact that there are currently supposed to be Scotland-wide terms and conditions, and that the Scottish Executive has recently created a national framework for nursery nurses, the failure of CoSLA to accept its responsibilities means we have to pursue claims in all 32 authorities. We will have to increase the pressure on local authorities and their paymasters, the Scottish Executive.'
