Scrapping the current system of tests and school league tables are among the measures in a review of the schools curriculum launched last week by the Scottish Executive.

Scrapping the current system of tests and school league tables are among the measures in a review of the schools curriculum launched last week by the Scottish Executive.

Education minister Peter Peacock said that national tests for five- to 14-year-olds would be replaced by assessment procedures that placed a greater emphasis on supporting and improving learning.

He said, 'The current system for testing and assessment is not effective. The focus on a few narrow parts of the curriculum has driven some schools and teachers to test, test and retest. There is a perverse incentive to teach the test, and test results have become a self-fulfilling prophecy.'
