Service 'blueprint' unveiled

The National Family and Parenting Institute (NFPI) last week called on Government departments to read its new report on family services before working out the details of the recent spending review (News, 25 July). The NFPI said it hoped its report, The Future for Family Services in England and Wales, published last week, will act as a blueprint for new spending priorities and family support outlined in the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review.

The NFPI said it hoped its report, The Future for Family Services in England and Wales, published last week, will act as a blueprint for new spending priorities and family support outlined in the Government's Comprehensive Spending Review.

The report looks at improving family services and supporting parents, children and young people across the community. It emphasises that investment is essential to ensure every parent is within easy reach of the services and support they need so they can receive help in dealing with problems before they reach crisis point.

Among the report's recommendations are that health visitors be given an expanded role and the creation of 'one-stop' information shops in local communities, where parents could access help and receive support through schools. The NFPI is piloting a new initiative to support parents through schools, funded by an 87,000 grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
